Drug Abuse
Mildred Siamutete

Drug abuse is the act of illicitly taking substances
An eye for an aye,
A tooth for a tooth
An ear for an ear
Words spoken but not heard
I called for help, but I was not helped
Why am I a victim of drug abuse?

I was born in a family
with a brother who was intoxicated
with drug abuse, subjected to physical abuse
my mother and father have no say
innocently sitting, he comes from nowhere
Bangumula, Bampumaula, Banyantaula
without a solid reason. But why this
weakness? Why this cold hatred?
Ooh Drug abuse! you have taken away
the love of a brother and stuffed his
heart with weakness, hurt him
and left him thoughtless.

Crime is done, gender based violence arises
my own mother was affected-- my drug
addict father always beat my mother
too late to save her life,
killed by father but father was never arrested and
months passed-- now he's dead
because of chirrhosis.

Drug abuse, you have taken away
my mother's life and my father's soul
leaving me an orphan.

At last the DEC* was formed
they have come to sensitize, educate
and punish drug abusers
with all the knowledge you have
learnt, distribute it and strive to educate others
As the Bembas say
Ushiumfumfwa patu nono
napafingi takomfwe
so I say Abstain, Abstain
from Drug Abuse to save the nation.
